THIS September sees the second annual Cutting Edge Cycle Challenge in aid of Cancer Research UK’s Join the Fight campaign.
Over the weekend of September 10-12, members from the shoe repairers industry will be pedalling for pounds and donning their lycra to try to raise £25,000 for Cancer Research.
And the staff from Shoe-String are organising the celebrations for the final day of the challenge at Rutland Water in Leicestershire, where fundraisers, their families and friends will be able to come together and relax after cycling their socks off!
More than 1 in 3 people will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime and raising money to help fight the battle against this disease is a subject close to many people’s hearts.
Shoe-String’s tele-sales supervisor, Pamela Turner, is a breast cancer survivor whose bubbly personality and infectious laughter are well known and loved throughout the industry.
Pam, 43, who started at Shoe-String in 1997, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2009 and has since completed treatment initially with a lumpectomy and then chemotherapy. She underwent radiotherapy for a month and is currently undergoing treatment with herceptin.
“Of course I was scared when I was diagnosed with breast cancer,” said Pam, “but I tried to come into work as much as possible.
“The normality of work and having a laugh with the customers helped to raise my spirits.”
“I wouldn’t say it has changed my outlook on life, but I certainly won’t let things bother me anymore.
This year’s cycle challenge features both Northern and Southern routes, starting at 7:00am on Friday, September 10. Each day is divided up into sections, and teams or individuals can sign up to do as many or as few as they can manage.
Participants can also sign up to cycle or walk all or part of Rutland Water on the final day of the challenge, Sunday, September 12, where all of the fundraisers from both the North and the South will be able to meet up and enjoy a good time.
